Product description

Author: Magdalena Gutowska

By analysing the painting from the Bernardine church in Krakow under the same title, the author introduces a slightly macabre and rather playful atmosphere. Death is a theme that is all too visible in the culture of the Polish Baroque. Sculptures, paintings, poems, including amorous ones, are just an element of a larger phenomenon. A true Sarmatian prepared to meet death exceptionally carefully. He organised a tombstone and a coffin in advance, and funerals were quite an event, of course with the deceased in the main role. Remember about death and prepare well for it – said preachers, works of art and manuals for dying well. Describing the phenomenon of death in Old Polish society is a great art.
