Translation, compilation and introduction: Dorota Sieńko
The comprehensive interests of the Jesuit Adam Adamandy Kochański (1631–1700) went beyond the framework of the knowledge of exact sciences in Poland at that time. Kochański was a mathematician, as well as a physicist and designer of machines and clocks, a teacher and librarian of King Jan III. His correspondence with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716), a philosopher, mathematician and physicist, is an important source of knowledge about the intellectual atmosphere of Europe at that time, when scientific work took on a team character and correspondence became an important instrument for exchanging ideas and building a ‘spiritual community’. The diversity of topics covered by both scientists is admirable. Leibniz presents Kochański with his work on the differential calculus and shares with him, in complete confidence, his invention of the ‘arithmetic machine’. He also encourages Kochański to get to know China, tries to build with him the science of the origin of nations, create the foundations of a universal language. Kochański, in turn, In his letters to Leibniz, he raises issues related to perpetual motion, gives descriptions of the construction of machines of his own idea and asks about their evaluation. Both scientists also discuss the political and social situation in Poland, with Leibniz showing particular interest in this respect; he even closely follows the operation of Polish mines.
